The Research Triangle Foundation Supports North Carolina’s STEM Education Strategy

1/9/2013

On Jan 9, 2013, the NC STEM Learning Network announced that The Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina (Research Triangle Foundation) donated $10,000 to help create new tools that enhance and support science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in North Carolina’s schools.

“STEM education is more than science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; it’s about ‘strategies that engage minds,’” said Dr. Sam Houston, president and CEO of the NC SMT Center, which oversees the NC STEM Learning Network. “The NC STEM Learning Network believes an educated workforce with relevant 21st century skills is the best economic development tool this state has, and we’re proud to partner with RTP Foundation to continue making positive impacts in education throughout North Carolina.”

“We are pleased to work with the NC STEM Learning Network to advance STEM education in North Carolina,” added Bob Geolas, president and CEO at RTP Foundation. “Keeping education relevant requires collaborative efforts between educators, businesses and government. RTP has a 50-year history fostering that kind of innovative collaboration, and we’re happy to continue that legacy with this donation.”

The funding will help the NC STEM Learning Network in developing additional tools to implement the recommendations of the state’s comprehensive strategy to advance STEM education. These tools include an easy-to-use rubric for schools interested in implementing STEM, assessment tools for teachers and administrators to track progress on implementing innovative STEM programs, and a comprehensive web portal of STEM education resources serving the state.

NC STEM Learning Network is a project housed at the N.C. Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) Education Center in partnership with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, N.C. Community College System, UNC General Administration, Battelle Memorial Institute, and others.
