Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak to Meet with Research Triangle Park Leadership at Elon University
Research Triangle Park, Sept. 30, 2013 - The Research Triangle Park of North Carolina has long been a stronghold for science, technology, research, discovery and creativity. Technology giants like IBM, Cisco, NetApp, EMC maintain large facilities in RTP; even Google maintains an under-the- stealth office in the region.
But there is one company that is not (yet) a significant presence in the area.
Elon University is helping to change that. The school is hosting Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Inc., at its Fall Convocation ceremony. Wozniak, a Silicon Valley icon who helped revolutionize the personal computer industry and brought computers to the hands of the mass market will serve as Elon’s keynote speaker.
But after the ceremony – that’s when the real magic will happen. A handful of the region’s most vocal community leaders will be meeting privately, afterwards, with “The Woz” himself – to talk all things Triangle.
The Research Triangle Park will be represented by CEO Bob Geolas; VP of Business Development Mason Ailstock; and Communications Director Erin Monday. Also standing in for the Triangle: Tom Miller, vice provost and executive director of NC State University’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, HQ Raleigh’s Community Manager Liz Tracy; Mital Patel, founder/attorney at Triangle Business Law; and King White, the Elon Triangle Alumni Chapter board member who facilitated the encounter.
Bob Geolas, president and CEO of the Research Triangle Park, said, “Apple – like RTP – stands for creativity and innovation; and we are enthusiastic about welcoming Mr. Wozniak to our area. This is an excellent opportunity to share our vision – and our redevelopment plans – with another entity known for vision.”
Elon University is an independent, residential liberal arts and sciences university with nationally accredited professional schools of business, communications, education, law and health sciences. Elon, located near Burlington, NC, is known for its spirit of innovation, a strong student-centered mission and commitment to high-impact, engaged educational experiences. The institution is consistently ranked among the nation's leaders in study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research, internships and leadership programs.
