Triangle Business Journal | October 6, 2011 | Monica Chen
Biogen Idec has appointed Machelle Sanders as the new head of the global biotechnology company’s Research Triangle Park site. Sanders succeeds Esther Alegria as vice president of manufacturing and general manager in RTP.
Alegria is relocating in mid-October to Denmark, where she will oversee the operational start-up of Biogen’s (Nasdaq: BIIB) international large-scale manufacturing facility in Hillerod.
Sanders has been in RTP since joining Biogen in 2007 and was appointed vice president of U.S. Quality Operations in October 2009. In 2010, she was promoted to the head of global quality assurance, the position she held before her most recent promotion.
Prior to Biogen, Sanders has held leadership positions in quality and manufacturing operations functions at other pharmaceutical and biotech firms including Purdue Pharmaceuticals, L.P. and Akzo Nobel-Diosynth.
Biogen employs about 900 workers in manufacturing and customer service in RTP, where the company manufactures multiple sclerosis therapies Avonex and Tysabri.
